-
- Introduction
-
- CDLABEL Version 2 for Windows is the second release of a Windows 3.1
- application designed to print labels for CD jewel boxes. Two labels
- are printed, a 15 cm by 11.7 cm label for the back of the jewel box
- and a 12 cm by 12 cm label for the cover insert. The cover insert label
- also has a 8 cm by 12 cm flap that provides for inside text.
-
- System Requriements
- Windows 3.1
- Printer with corresponding Windows driver (support for graphics and
- True Type required)
- VBRUN300.DLL (not included to reduce size of ZIP archive, commonly
- available)
-
- How to Use CDLABEL
-
- CDLABEL prints to the default printer configured within Windows. As
- CDLABEL uses the printer font metrics to display an accurate preview of the
- label, the printer must be configured when CDLABEL is executed.
-
- CDLABEL has the following choices on its menu bar:
- File
- New Label
- Initializes label back to saved settings and
- resets all label text.
- Open Label
- Displays file open dialog to load an already
- saved cdlabel file (*.cdl).
- Save Label
- Displays file save dialog to save the current
- cdlabel.
- Print Setup
- Displays printer setup dialog. Note that
- CDLABEL uses the Visual Basic Printer object
- and can ONLY print to the default printer.
- Setting the specific printer choice will not
- affect the print destination of CDLABEL. This
- menu choice is provided for configuration of the
- default printer only.
- Print Label
- Displays print dialog. Note above warnings as
- they apply to use of the Setup button on the
- print dialog as well.
- Save Settings
- Save the current font/color/effect settings
- to CDLABEL.INI in the windows directory. Label
- text is not saved.
- Exit
- Exit CDLABEL.
- Options
- Half Scale
- This is a toggle choice. When activated, the
- label preview is displayed in one-half scale.
- This is done automatically on displays 800x600
- or smaller as the full scale preview will not
- fit.
- Solid Lines
- By default, labels are printed with crop marks
- to indicate the label edges. This speeds printing
- on slow printers such as dot matrix printer.
- To print labels with full lines, select this
- option. It is a toggle choice.
- Help
- About
- Displays about box.
-
- Below the menu bar is the view button. It is used to move between the
- inside and outside previews. The current preview is displayed to the
- left of the button and the button text indicates the action it will
- perform when pressed.
-
- To edit the label, move to the desired preview and click on the preview
- to display the edit dialog for that portion of the label.
-
- The Edit Label Outside dialog has the following items:
-
- Clear All Fields button - clears all text from the text input fields.
- Spine Font button - displays Font dialog for selection of spine
- text font. Default font is Arial 14 point.
- Spine Text field - single line text input field for back label
- spine text.
- Copy Spine Text button - copies text from Spine Text field into Title
- Text field.
- Title Font button - displays Font dialog for selection of title
- text font. Default font is Arial 36 point.
- Title Text field - single line text input field for title text.
- Body Font button - displays Font dialog for selection of
- body font. Default font is Arial 14 point.
- Body Text field - multiple line text input field for body text.
-
- The Edit Label Inside dialog has the following items:
-
- Clear Body button - clears all text from the text input field.
- Body Font button - displays Font dialog for selection of body
- text font. Default font is Arial 14 point.
- Body Text field - multiple line text input field for body text.
-
- Note that lines too long are truncated when printed, including the body.
- If such lines are noted, either insert a carriage return (if body text)
- or reduce the font size to fit. As the back label and the front label
- are formatted the same, there will be a 1.4 cm right margin on the preview
- and the back label. This is due to the smaller size of the front label
- (12 cm versus 13.4 cm).
-
- When the label is ready, select Print Label from the File menu.
- The upper label is for the back of the jewel box, behind the cd holder insert.
- Fold the two spine labels up at a right angle to to back of the label.
- Remove the insert from the jewel box and place the label in the cavity.
- Replace the cd holder.
-
- The lower label is the front cover insert. Fold over along the mark and
- insert in the lid of the jewel box with the larger flap visible to the
- outside.

- Version History
-
- 7/93 - Version 1.0
- Initial release.
-
- 3/94 - Version 2.0
- Switch to Visual Basic 3.0
-
- Added menu bar with label save/load.
-
- Added inside flap to front label for additional information.
-
- Added CDLABEL.INI to store product settings.
-
- Adjusted positioning of labels to fit when printed on HP
- DeskJet 500. I have tested with a 500C using HP's version 3
- and version 4 Windows drivers. The labels were fully printed.
- I did note color problems with the crop marks with the version 3
- driver but these problems were not present with the version 4
- driver.
-
- Switched from solid cut lines to crop marks to speed printing,
- especially for dot matrix and ink jet printers.
-
- Added some more error checking, but CDLABEL still is weak when
- printers are misconfigured or default fonts are missing.
-
- 3/94 - 2nd release of Version 2.0 (2.01)
- Corrected bugs in print routines which caused labels to be
- .25 inches too large.
-
- 5/94 - Version 2.02
- Add ability to select crop marks or solid lines when printing
- labels.
-
- 10/94 - Version 2.03
- Fix bug where task did not exit when the window was closed from
- the system menu. Fix bug where window scale was improperly reset
- when New Label was selected from the menu and no cdlabel.ini file
- was present.
-
- I would like to thank all of those who have taken a look at CDLABEL and
- e-mailed back their thoughts, suggestions, and bug reports. Many of
- their suggestions are seen in this version and I haven't forgotton those
- that didn't make this release.
